About Us

Walker Midgley Insurance Brokers Limited was formed over forty years ago as a subsidiary of Midgley & Son Limited of Carlisle Street, Sheffield, to look after the company's insurance needs.

In addition to their main business of ferro alloy merchanting, Midgley & Son had several other subsidiary companies with diverse business interests including marine surveying, shipping (including a deep water wharf on the River Trent), compressed air equipment, auto electrical and ore crushing.

The broking business was run by Tony Walker (hence Walker Midgley Insurance Brokers) and, whilst the main objective was to look after the insurance requirements of the Midgley Group, business from outside was soon on the increase. In 1977 the staffing level was increased by 100% at one fell swoop when Tony Wood joined the company.

Walker Midgley steadily grew and in 1986 was joined by Paul Burgan to strengthen the commercial side of the business. In 1988 the company became independent when Tony Wood and Paul Burgan took over. They moved from the Midgley & Son site to the refurbished offices of the old Sheffield General Cemetery Company - Montague House - literally sited in a graveyard.

Ten years later Paul Burgan retired and Tony Wood became the sole shareholder. In 2003, with the lease on Montague House about to expire and accommodation becoming a real problem, the growing company moved to its present offices in the centre of Sheffield.
